District Court

Since the adjournment of the last Grand Jury, there have been brought to the notice of the District Attorney five charges of murder and one for assault with intent to commit murder, as follows: Juan Sedillo, W.R. MIlligan, Manuel Lucero, Madalina Calderon, for murder, and Ledden for assault with intent, etc.  These five are now in custody, and the sixth, the villian of the whole outfit , is at large.  The four first named are from the Little Colorado and the latter from the Verde.  From this showing the need for another Grand Jury will be apparent.  It seems remarkable that the spirit of murder should attack a certain element of our people just at a time when our courts are ready to take hold of them--and that through the remainder of the year comparative peace should prevail.

Madeline Calderon and Manuel Lucero were arrested last evening by Deputy Sheriff Pierce, on a warrant charging them with complicity in the Springerville mob.

The people from the Little Colorado, here in attendance at the Grand Jury, are getting tired of us.  They feel the necessity for their presence at home among the crops, which are suffering more or less from their absence, and we can well appreciate their discomforts, when we learn that they receive nothing in return for their long and tedious journey and their expenses while here.  This is not all.  If indictments are found against persons charged with crimes and concerning which they have been called to testify, they may be detained here for a month yet to come, a period of time which, we are assured, no one of them is able to lose.

The Little Colorado representatives are packing their valises, preparatory for a homeward trip, they being no longer required here.

The Grand Jury, which convened and was discharged the past week, found no bill against W.R. MIlligan, Deputy Sheriff of the Little Colorado, and we are glad to know that he goes home fully exonerated.

The citizens of the Little Colorado section of the county regret, very much, the failure of Congress to give them a little something towards repairing the road over the Mogollon mountains. So do we.

Only two Postoffices on the Little Colorado.  One at St.Johns and one at St.Joseph.  This ____ provides the people of that section and the mail route should be changed.   Springerville contains more people than all the rest of the vicinity and should be included while the route is being run on a special contract.

A WRETCHED MAN

It is not the love of economy that makes him squeal -- in fact county expenses troubles him least of anything else -- nor is it love be bears for the poor farmers, who are compelled to be absent from their homes and crops; but it is the fear of seeing his black-hearted villainous compadres brought to justice that makes him quiver.   If it was a white man who had committed murder, even if it had been years ago, he would not call it "old matters" and say twas a great and unnecessary expense to the county to have him brought to justice.   "Not evidence to convict them" he says.   Pray, when did he examine the witnesses that he is such a competent Judge.   I think that such a wise man should be District Judge, as all witness fees could be saved thereby, for the county, no one need ever be summoned to the witness stand, as he could predict the purport of their evidence without ever seeing the witness.                 TWIG.

L.B. St.James, we learn, has been taking an active part in the matter of inquiring into recent troubles on the Little Colorado.  For doing this, the boomerang of Montezuma Street, insinuates in his usual sneaking style that Louis wants "gold, a commission in the Army or a post-tradership".   He judges other people by himself.

The MINER accuses Sol Barth of Little Colorado of being a thief and of having attempted to kill some one.   It wants a Grand Jury to investigate Sol, who has investigated the proprietor of the MINER, and furnished proof, to this office, that Mr. Proprietor's character isn't like that of Cesar's wife.   But, that's nothing new.   Sol has requested publication of facts, furnished by him, but we really do not care to set the MINER man any "higher" in the scale of villiancy [sic] than he is known to rank.

The same paper wants another Grand Jury to investigate one Francisco Baca, late Justice of the Peace over on the Little Colorado.  Wonderfull [sic], isn't it, how this man's mind has changed concerning his old amigos of the Little Colorado.  A few months ago he stood ready to rob any man--of his fair fame--who did not believe with him, that all citizens of the Little Colorado were, as he asserted, "honorable men and good citizens."   Most of them voted for Cambell, hence the change of MINER logic.
