Two Arizona miners, Freeman and Hill, recently played a huge hoax upon their fellows. They represented that in the country 400 miles to the north of Prescott could be found large quantities of gold. Fifty-six men with 112 animals banded together and followed the two from Prescott. Water could not be procured and the whole party nearly died from thirst. Freeman and Hill finally admitted that the affair was a joke. They were hung in just 100 seconds.

Another Killing

The following letter was received last Wednesday evening and fully explains itself. SHAKESPEARE, N. M. August 17, 1881

I have just heard the particulars of the massacre in the Animas Valley, which are as follows: On Saturday morning, the 13th inst. a party of seven men were camped about five miles below Lang's ranch and near Skeleton valley. About daylight they were attacked by a large party of Mexicans, five out of seven were killed outright, one mortally wounded and one missing. The names of the killed were Mr. Clanton, father of I and P. Clanton, Richard Gray, son of Judge Gray of Arizona, James Crane and William Lang. The name of the fifth is unknown. The wounded man lived long enough to tell the particulars. His name was William Byers. The missing man's name is Charles Snow. There were one or two more men missing at the time my informant left Gillespie.

If I hear any further particulars I will let you know.
